Le groupe est créé en 1982 par Morrissey (parole et chant) et Johnny Marr (compositeur et guitare), accompagnés par Mike Joyce (batterie) et Andy Rourke (basse) (décédé en 2023).
A sa séparation en 1987, Morrissey (voir la lettre M) entame une carrière solo et Johnny Marr accompagne artistes et groupes, crée Electronic (1988-2001)… Il se produit désormais sous le nom de Jonnhy Marr and the Healers et a sorti 4 albums.

Après la fin des Sugargliders les frères ont poursuivi leur carrière avec The Steinbecks.
